Anka“ is a timeless children’s fairy tale, set in the bucolic countryside of central Europe at the turn of the 20th Century. It is a story about the quest for love and acceptance, revealed through the adventures of Anka, an orphan girl who bravely sets off in pursuit of a home, facing life’s hardships, and finding her place through the help of a magical world and its mysterious forest creatures. Running away from her evil custodian, Anka finds what she is looking for in the most improbable of places – a brick making factory, and in the most improbable of men – the “Brazilian”, a rebellious and free-spirited factory worker whose damaged adulthood, torn by temptation and a traumatic past stands in harsh contrast to the pure, hopeful childhood of Anka. Their fates will interwine, as they embark on an emotional, adventure-packed journey that will bring them to the realization that, as a family, they can offer each other the companionship and care fate has deprived them both of.
Made collaboratively with children from public housing estates in the Illawarra region of Australia, Protection uses a unique blend of film and animation to tell stories about childhood. It is inspired by the lives and experiences of the film’s adventurous and often hilarious young cast. There’s a re-telling of Goldilocks – featuring a display home and a big, bad real estate agent. There’s witches, parties and billy cart derbies, and a lovely wedding to an imaginary prince. And there are also stories of friendship, breakups, grief and and facing up to your fears and mistakes. These are stories told by kids from their perspective making Protection a celebration of childhood and a tribute to the resilience of children.
